Hand in Hand with Equine Therapy

Horseback riding has been shown to help self-confidence. Riders increase their self-esteem and self-image, in addition to several other mental and physical benefits.  A study completed by The British Horse Society (BHS) concluded that horseback riding stimulated positive psychological feelings, reducing depression by 30%, as well as lowering the chance of dementia by 30%. In addition, communicating and interacting with horses has been shown to have a positive effect on people, generating a feeling of relaxation.  Therapeutic riding programs, such as a treatment called Equine-Assisted Therapy or EAT, have been widely used to improve ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, and other mental health conditions. As a sport, equestrianism was first included in the 1900 Olympics and reappeared in 1912, but it was not until 1952 that civilians and women were allowed to participate.

Congratulations to two members of our Rochester Community who discovered they share the same passion for horses and attend the same horseback riding academy: La Academia, to achieve personal goals, by strengthening their abilities and emotions! María de los Ángeles Aranguren, from 4C, and her Family Coordinator, María Fernanda Gutiérrez, had the opportunity to participate in the competition “Concurso Nacional de Semilleros”, last weekend, Sept. 25th and 26th, at Club La Hacienda in Cajicá. Here is what they have to say about it:

“I like horseback riding because it is fun and cool to gallop. I also like to graze and feed the horses and take them to eat grass. At the Academy, most horses have fruit names. My favorite horses are Kiwi, Papaya and Peach. I started riding when I was 18 months old. Last Sunday, I had a 70–cm seedbed and at first I felt very nervous, but then, when I finished, I felt very happy. At the end, I came in fourth place.”

“I used to horseback ride regularly when I was a child and now that I have the chance to do it again after more than 25 years of not practicing, it fills my soul with pure joy. Horses are magnificent animals that can easily bond with us; they are capable of reading our emotions since they are feeling-oriented animals. Being part of this Semilleros contest proved that it is never too late to pursue your passions. What’s yours?”
