This semester, students have been exploring the concept of identity and how we define ourselves as we grow and mature. With regards to Global Citizenship, students have discussed how the customs of a culture contribute to identity and bind people together, but sometimes hinder communication with people from other places. Students have been delving into the world of subcultures and have considered the role these groups play in giving young people an opportunity to explore who they want to be and empowering them to express themselves in creative, sometimes extreme, ways.
Students have developed their analytical thinking skills by analyzing an article about discrimination, how pervasive it is, and what some young people are doing to fight it in their communities. This links to the concept of I-dea (Inclusion via diversity, equity and anti-racism) which aims to develop competencies in understanding, appreciating, and adapting to different ideas, perspectives, cultures, languages and customs.
The graded assignment for this unit was to create a news report on subcultures at Rochester School. Students were asked to interview different members of this subculture and ask them questions about why they joined the group, why they identify with this group and how they express themselves. There were many groups to choose from such as: Swim Team, Basketball Team, Football Team, Volleyball Team, Sustainability Club, RMUN students, Dance Team and many more.

Este semestre, los estudiantes han estado explorando el concepto de identidad y cómo nos definimos a nosotros mismos a medida que crecemos y maduramos. Con respecto a la Ciudadanía Global, los estudiantes han discutido cómo las costumbres de una cultura contribuyen a la identidad y unen a las personas, pero a veces dificultan la comunicación con personas de otros lugares. Los estudiantes han estado profundizando en el mundo de las subculturas y han considerado el papel que desempeñan estos grupos al brindarles a los jóvenes la oportunidad de explorar quiénes quieren ser y empoderarlos para expresarse de manera creativa, a veces extrema.
Los estudiantes han desarrollado sus habilidades de pensamiento analítico analizando un artículo sobre la discriminación, cuán generalizada es y qué están haciendo algunos jóvenes para combatirla en sus comunidades. Esto se vincula con el concepto de I-dea (Inclusión a través de la diversidad, la equidad y el antirracismo) que tiene como objetivo desarrollar competencias para comprender, apreciar y adaptarse a diferentes ideas, perspectivas, culturas, idiomas y costumbres.
La tarea calificada para esta unidad fue crear un informe de noticias sobre las subculturas en la escuela de Rochester. Se pidió a los estudiantes que entrevistaran a diferentes miembros de esta subcultura y les hicieran preguntas sobre por qué se unieron al grupo, por qué se identifican con este grupo y cómo se expresan. Había muchos grupos para elegir como: Equipo de Natación, Equipo de Baloncesto, Equipo de Fútbol, Equipo de Voleibol, Club de Sostenibilidad, estudiantes de RMUN, Equipo de Baile y muchos más.
